The 5 best ways to look on the bright side

Written by Tanya Milne - Product Executive | Mar 31, 2020 7:47:34 AM

There's no denying that this is a strange and unfamiliar time. We're all having to adjust and adapt.

One of the best things you can do is to try to redefine your mindset. This is because it can be hugely helpful to look on the bright side, and to see the positives in a given situation.

We've come up with a few silver linings, unexpected delights, and how to make the most of the current time.

1. Gaining time

Commutes vary, but in London most people spend an average of two hours a day travelling between home and work. having so much extra time now in the day is such a joy.

The mornings and evenings feel more peaceful, without the hustle and bustle of public transport, trying to get a seat on the bus, or squeezing yourself onto a completely packed tube carriage. Why not start off your day with yoga or meditation instead, to gain focus and mindfulness for the day.

2. Exercising outside

Before, squeezing in a run or walk before work would have been nigh-on impossible for many people. Finding the time to spend outside in the fresh air could also be difficult, amidst the business of every day life.

Responding to the current situation, David Attenborough has said that the natural world can provide "joy and solace" in times of crisis. There's something restorative and therapeutic about going for a stroll or run or cycle, and seeing the (hopefully!) blue skies and trees and blooming flowers. So now's the perfect time to get out into the fresh air and stretch your legs.

3. Reconnecting with old friends and family

In this day and age, connecting with friends, family, and people all over the world is easier than ever before. However, we're also busier and more time-pressured - so finding the time to reach out to people can be hard.

Now that most people are in the same boat, it's the perfect time to catch up with that friend who you rarely get a chance to speak to as your schedules are so different, or to call members of your family who live abroad that you haven't spoken to in a while. It's the perfect time to reach out and reconnect.

4. Learning new skills

Perhaps there are new skills that you've always wanted to learn, but you've always been too busy to do so. Whether that be cooking, coding, writing, or anything at all... Now's the time!

With the whole internet at your fingertips, it's never been easier to find resources relating to what you want to learn. At the moment, we have far fewer distractions and more free time, so let's make the most of it!

5. Taking a breather

Life is hectic. And hecticness can be a good thing - it makes life exciting and energising. But sometimes you need to take a breather from the chaos, to recover, to slow down and to truly relax. It's rare that we ever get so much time for introspection and meditativeness, and to truly have time to ourselves.

So let's take this time to recharge our batteries, focus on ourselves and our goals. And when the time comes for things to go back to normal, we'll be ready to appreciate, enjoy, and take on life with a whole new vigour.
